Alex Smithies Penalty Shootout Hero

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0-0 Sheffield United.

That was the score at the end of 90 & 120 minutes as the two Yorkshire sides played out a goalless draw at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Huddersfield had the better of the chances with Danny Ward hitting the crossbar and attempts from Tommy Miller & twice from Peter Clarke were cleared off the Sheffield United goal line.

So it went to a dramatic Penalty shootout!

First up for Huddersfield was Tommy Miller, who had his effort saved (0-0). Lee Williamson missed the opportunity to give The Blades the lead when he also missed (0-0). Damien Johnson missed (0-0) then Neill Collins scored to give Sheff United the lead (0-1).

When Huddersfield missed their third successive penalty through Alan Lee (0-1) The Blades sensed their chance but Matthew Lowton then also missed (0-1). Peter Clarke drew Huddersfield level (1-1) with sub Andy Taylor then hitting a post to keep it tied (1-1).

After the run of misses in the early stages Scott Arfield (Huddersfield), Chris Porter (Sheff Utd), Jordan Rhodes (Huddersfield), Stephen Quinn (Sheff Utd), Gary Roberts (Huddersfield), Harry Maguire (Sheff Utd), Calum Woods (Huddersfield), Michael Doyle (Sheff Utd), Jack Hunt (Huddersfield), Michael O'Halloran (Sheff Utd), Sean Morrison (Huddersfield) and Matt Hill (Sheff Utd) all scored to leave it level at 7-7.

It was and had been a nerve dangling affair with heads in hands for most of the shootout for both sets of fans.

It would ultimately come down to the keepers, Alex Smithies & Steve Simonsen.

The Blades 'keeper had certainly had the busier game of the two and Smithies who had an indifferent game was the first to step up.

Smithies confidently blasted his penalty past Simonsen, who despite getting a hand to it simply had no chance that spot kick put The Terriers 8-7 up and it was over to Simonsen.

The Blades keeper blasted his spot-kick high over the bar and into the gleeful Huddersfield Town support. Simonsen dropped to his knees and face down into the turf as the celebrations for Huddersfield Fans, Players and Management commenced.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN WERE PROMOTED TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
