New Contract For Cranie
Huddersfield have confirmed a contract extension for former England U21 international Martin Cranie.
If Cranie hadn't signed this new deal the arrival from Barnsley - following his release in 2015 - would have been out of contract at the end of the season. This new 12 month extension will keep him at the John Smith's Stadium until the summer of 2018.
Cranie made his 50th appearance for Huddersfield - 35 have been as a starter - in the dramatic win over Leeds. This was a game that saw Chelsea loanee Kasey Palmer sustain a hamstring injury that's set to keep the forward out for eight weeks.
Huddersfield boss David Wagner told the Official Website.
'I am delighted that we have agreed a deal to keep Martin at the Club, as he is a very important player in our squad. He has been excellent in the games he has played this season and last, making him a real competitor for the right back position alongside Tommy Smith. It is perfect for me to have two high quality players who can both play. His ability to play different positions is valuable too.'
The Championship experience Cranie has from spells with several clubs made Wagner keen to secure the 'important character' on this new deal.
He added keeping the likes of 30 year Cranie at Huddersfield was as important as brining fresh faces to Town.
'Martin is a great professional and knows the Sky Bet Championship very well too, which has been very helpful as the players who joined us this season got used to the division. He`s a very important character in the dressing room. I have always said that keeping our good players at the Club is just as important as bringing new ones in, so I`m very happy today.'
