Technology For The Championship In 2017/18

On Thursday the Football League confirmed that there was now an agreement in principle for the introduction of goal-line technology from the start of the 2017/18 season.

The meeting between the EFL and member clubs in the Championship took place yesterday and the agreement in principle was reached, and subject to further discussions the matter will be presented at the EFL AGM next June so the regulations can be amended to cover the introduction of the new technology.

The introduction of technology will be limited to goal-line incidents only, similar to the process now in place in the Premier League following its introduction back in the 2013/14 campaign. The 'Hawk-eye' system informs the match day referee automatically if a ball has fully crossed the line.

It doesn't seem at this point in time that it will be introduced below the Championship level.

Speaking to the efl.com as the announcement was made, CEO Shaun Harvey explained.

'I welcome the decision of our clubs to introduce goal-line technology into the EFL. PGMOL officials do an incredible job and this decision is about providing our match officials with as much support as possible to ensure they are best placed to make the right calls in even the most difficult of situations. The technology is widely adopted elsewhere in football, including in two of our competitions and I therefore welcome it as an important addition to the Sky Bet Championship from next season.'
