Derby County 1-1 Huddersfield Town

Jacob Butterfield's late strike denied Huddersfield back to back victories in the Championship. The result also confirmed Brighton's promotion to the Premier League.

Huddersfield came into the game knowing three points would all but confirm a playoff spot and they were off to the perfect start in the 9th minute.

Joe Lolley found Martin Cranie in space on the right, who's smart right footed cross fell into German striker Collin Quaner's path and with one touch he found the bottom left corner of the net. The best possible start for David Wagner's men.

Derby thought they were level almost immediately through a Darren Bent header, only to find out it had been chalked off for offside.

Since falling behind Derby were on top. The Rams were enjoying a large amount of possession in Huddersfield territory without really threatening Danny Wards goal.

In the 36th minute Bradley Johnson found himself in space on the edge of the Huddersfield box, but the ex Norwich midfielder didn't get hold of his shot properly and it rolled way to the right of the goal.

In the closing stages of the half, Derby had three free kick opportunities all in similar positions outside the box. The first two didn't cause any problems for the Town back line but the third consecutive set piece was nearly crafted to perfection. Tom Ince picked out Matej Vydra with the free kick which caught the Terriers defence off guard, but Vydra dragged his right footed shot wide of the target.

Derby continued their pressing into the second half and were nearly level when Ikechi Anya's effort was tipped round the post by Danny Ward.

With twenty minutes remaining, Gary Rowett acted fast and opted to make a triple substitution bringing on Camara, Russell and Butterfield for Ince, Vydra and Johnson.

In the 75th minute Darren Bent hit a promising free kick way over the bar which frustrated the Derby faithful who were becoming increasingly impatient.

Two minutes from time, ex Town midfielder Jacob Butterfield seized the opportunity to fire an effort at the Huddersfield goal and he was in luck as his shot deflected off substitute Jonathan Hogg and found its way into the bottom right corner of the net.

The late equaliser confirmed Brighton's promotion to the top flight and meant Huddersfield had to wait until at least next Saturday to all but confirm their spot in the top six.
