'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Money Money Money

If anyone wonders why Reading put out a largely second string team against Manchester United in the FA Cup last night, they should remember that, like Arsene Wenger, manager Steve Coppell has a degree in Economics.

Winning the fifth round FA Cup tie is worth £120,000, plus the £265,000 for the live transmission on BBC which they have collected anyway. If Reading can hold on to their current sixth place in the Premiership, they will collect around £25m in prize money, plus qualifying for Europe. As far as the FA Cup is concerned, it has been won by one of the big four clubs since 1995 when it went to Everton.

So actually you don't need a degree in Economics to work out the maths.
