'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Huddersfield - Pub Talk

I was talking to a friend of mine down at the pub the other day, about his support of the club, and he came up with an interesting comment or two.

Its thirty five years since Huddersfield were in the top flight of English football, and arguably they have not produced a player to match the quality of Frank Worthington or Trevor Cherry since.

The club has been bouncing around the lower leagues for over twenty years in the mid to late nineties when our next really big opportunity came to make the big time, and how sadly and quickly the joy turned to pain at that time, when we clearly had one of the best sides in the second tier, were top of the league at Christmas with everything looking rosy. We sold the best player we had at the club in a long time to our promotion rivals (yes rivals) who subsequently got promoted and we didn't !

It does take some beating for the worst transfer decision ever made, for whatever reason !

Since then decline and disappointment have been the staple diet of the Huddersfield supporter, until we reached rock bottom through administration and with the re-appointment of Peter Jackson, and the sound financial backing of Ken Davy, started to climb the football staircase to heaven again.

Going close to promotion to the Championship last term, we all felt optimistic about this season, and the addition of proven goalscorer Luke Beckett in the summer seemed like the final piece of the jigsaw.

Since then Peter Jackson seemed to lose the plot, preferring not to use his newly signed and expensive striker, and then selling former favourite Abbott to promotion rivals Swansea in what to some seemed like a repeat of past mistakes.

But despite it all, all the hurt, disappointment, anger, frustration and at times despair, that are mixed with times of joy, pleasure and pride, he still supports the club, because he loves the Town, loves the club and the trips to Cardiff and Wembley for the play off finals and other highlights seem to somehow make it all worthwhile.

What's your view, apart from not wanting to ever go to the pub with us !
