Is Ian Wright a racist, the former Arsenal and England player now turned TV presenter, and much loved Mr Enthusiasm on MotD.
I think not, but I ask the question, because of his latest comments published in the sun newspaper, which to me seem perfectly sensible, and made with the intention of benefiting the game.
Wright says
'There is talk about quotas being introduced to stop the flood of foreign players.
I think each team should play at least six English players — which could only benefit our national teams.
The other rule I`d bring in is that players are only allowed to represent the country of their birth, or the nationality of their parents. Not grandparents, which is ridiculous.'
However it does not escape me that this site has run articles on the current situation within English football recently, only for our members and the site to be called racist by Arsenal fans for suggesting the very same thing that their former hero is now advocating.
Will they condemn their former hero in such abusive terms of ridicule as we have witnessed here, I doubt it.
Clearly should Ian Wright's suggestion be implemented this would be a problem for the current Arsenal management as it would for other top premiership sides, who would be practically unable to field a side.
Surely it is time to have a little common sense in this debate, Ian Wright is one of now literally dozens of prominent figures within the English game and media all voicing concern over the effects the way many clubs have been de Anglicised.
The time has come for the tide of concern amongst English footballs past masters not to be ignored.
