Ian Wright - racist, I think not !

Is Ian Wright a racist, the former Arsenal and England player now turned TV presenter, and much loved Mr Enthusiasm on MotD.

I think not, but I ask the question, because of his latest comments published in the sun newspaper, which to me seem perfectly sensible, and made with the intention of benefiting the game.

Wright says

'There is talk about quotas being introduced to stop the flood of foreign players.

I think each team should play at least six English players — which could only benefit our national teams.

The other rule I`d bring in is that players are only allowed to represent the country of their birth, or the nationality of their parents. Not grandparents, which is ridiculous.'

However it does not escape me that this site has run articles on the current situation within English football recently, only for our members and the site to be called racist by Arsenal fans for suggesting the very same thing that their former hero is now advocating.

Will they condemn their former hero in such abusive terms of ridicule as we have witnessed here, I doubt it.

Clearly should Ian Wright's suggestion be implemented this would be a problem for the current Arsenal management as it would for other top premiership sides, who would be practically unable to field a side.

Surely it is time to have a little common sense in this debate, Ian Wright is one of now literally dozens of prominent figures within the English game and media all voicing concern over the effects the way many clubs have been de Anglicised.

The time has come for the tide of concern amongst English footballs past masters not to be ignored.

And just who ! will sort it all out ? the FA ? I don't think so !
Terriers
Nobody should sort it out. The national game is a pile of crap at the moment and i would not miss one bit of sleep if Arsenal never signed any English player again. It doesn't matter anyway, there are so many young English players coming throught he academy that Arsenal would still be i the top four if this racist rule was brought in. Ian Wright is a Nationalist idiot who cry's when England lose. Club football rules and England drools.
Goofle
I suppose you lot would reject Capello or Lippi would you?
Goofle
I feel for Wrighty, he must be torn between his patriotism and his link to a now foreign side. It cant be easy, but he still seems to smile.
Towntalk
Its great having a good side isnt it Arsenal fans? Its a shame crap clubs seem to have more English players who lack footballing ability but have "heart"
Goofle
It is a great shame that Wrighty has to say such a thing. He must know its going to go against what a lot of current Arsenal fans want to hear.I think to myself what would I think if say Frank Worthington said something as A Hudds legend that was oppose to the current clubs thinking. To be honest I would think he was speaking with the best of intentions, so thats is how i would view Wrightys comments. To me if I were to be so against a club legend like Worthington I would probably be supporting the wrong club. I think Arsenal fans are in a real hole over this whole situation. But Yorkshire is a lot more patriotic than modern London, so its a tough call from here in Gods country.
Towntalk
go wrightie, but stop wearing shirts with the same colour tie, style boy use it don't lose it.
Terriertotty
There is no hole. We are club over country. That is it. Some do want England to do well (not me) and would like there to be something, but they have the knowledge to realise that this quota will make English football worse. Arsene Wenger or Ian Wright...who would you side with?
Goofle
Would you believe it, Tony Time under one of his many guises having yet another go at Arsenal and foreign players. Do we think Wrighty is racist? No, just a footballer who is not qualified to talk about anything but the best place to stand in the box and wait for a rebound. Do we think your racist TT, Jon Ski, or whatever new northern monkey name your going by? Damn *****in' straight. DIE, DIE, TONY *****IN' DIE! DIE, DIE, JON SKI *****IN' DIE!
Ozi Gooner
he sounds nice !
Towntalk
The intellectual argument against quotas was won a long time ago whatever narrow thoughts remain in some circles. It isn't possible to convince everyone but then there is still a Flat Earth Society equally convinced that the world isn't round. Wrighty has his opinion, which he is entitled to express, and it is indeed shared by a number of others. But whatever his qualities Wrighty isn't famed for his intellect. It is wrong though to suggest, as this article does, that there is only a weight of opinion in favour. Many people inside and outside are implacably opposed to the idea of quotas. As for the issue of racism - it is really quite simple. Anyone advocating discrimination either in favour of, or against people, based solely on their race is, by definition, expressing racist views.
Amos.
It is very sad that they are dissing their own legend, but i suppose Wrighty new he would get that reaction from current gunners fans. Any else see the irony in an ozi commenting on the English league.
VanMan
I think its wrong to call it racist, Wrighty is just expressing his concern for English football, and in any event you could be English or British if that's what he means and still be asiain, or carribean, or eastern european, or chinese or from any number of cultural backgrounds, that are defined as different race, quotas are about English football and because of the above, would not be racist. Good on Wrighty, he is a living examole of it, British, Black and proud to be, just as it should be.
Eddie01
Disagreeing with an opinion is not disrespecting someone. It is just disagreement. On the other hand those supporting quotas rarely if ever support the proposition with reasoned debate or deal with the many strong counter arguments against them on an intellectual basis. Usually this in only justified with patriotic jingoism and flag waving. This can be fairly described as bigotry. As does the view that any outside of England is not entitled to comment, or have an opinion, on the English League.
Amos.
Goofie comment Ian Wright is a Nationalist idiot who cry's when England lose, is dissing your own.
Eddie01
You have a gunner on here saying wrighty is a cry baby, that is direspecting someone, and one of his own clubs past legends !
VanMan
Goofles opinion is his own. I don't agree with it, nor do many other gooners though there are also plenty of non-gooners without a high regard for Wrighty. But then there is no obligation to agree with him just because he played for the club. Neither is there a need to paint all Arsenal supporters in the same colours just because of the opinions of one supporter or group of supporters. Similarly it is wrong for the site editor here to continue to pursue a personal campaign against Arsenals player policy without introducing the balance of the counter agument in some of his lead articles. There are a number of excellent pieces exploring the deficiencies in English football posted on the VitalArsenal site and highlighting the positive side of Arsenals contribution to the England cause. These are never aired here. There is a wider external debate running for a few weeks now regarding the intention of the English FA to appoint a foreign coach. Shouldn't this paradox be introduced into the debate here? This or course wouldn't serve the blatant bias of the site editor and his various incarnations but it would add some credibility to a site that is frankly a charade.
Amos.
Wrighty is not that intellectually challenged as amos suggests, he has certainly taken advice before making these comments, and as a black brit can speak out without getting the lazy racist response that a white player like say Alan Smith or Martin Keown would get. Of course as an outstanding patriot and supporter of the England team he can as is being demonstrated have his remarks ridiculed and termed jingoistic.
VanMan
There is no need for him to take advice. There is nothing wrong with having an opnion in favour of quotas. Plenty of others have expressed this opinion. The idea doesn't have any greater merit because Wrighty is black or because he is a staunch supporter of the England team. It is still wrong to advocate a policy that selects people for club football on the basis of their race rather than ability. It discriminates against people with the same legal rights to pursue their chosen profession in this country on the basis of their race. You wouldn't accept such a policy from any other employer whose recruitment policy was driven by racial selection. Personalising the issuing as this article has done is disingenuos. It's the message that's wrong whoever the messenger maybe.
Amos.
Am i reading this "Wright" sorry right, we have terriers fans supporting Ian Wright Arsenal legend against an attack it seems here from Arsenal fans. "Its a mad world alwright"
Terriers
It's a mad world here alright. Why do you need your Terriers guise to make a point Jon Ski? Aren't you confident enough in your own skin to justify your points? Your alter egos were detailed quite clearly on the VitalArsenal site last week. Why not stand up and make your own case if you truly believe you are right? It's all rather pathetic really.
Amos.
Ive followed this argument and Jon has asked for the gunners to have their id's checked on the forum here by posting, like our members did with you, so far no takers from the gunners. ?????????.
VanMan
nobody has come to the forum from Arsenal , says it all really. Do you spell Coward with an a or an e, or should the e be included in hypocrits.
VanMan
are you all idiots!? For a start just because we love Wrighty as a former Arsenal centre-forward does not mean we have to agree with his opinions as a man. That's life. The whole player quota canard is pure crowd-pleasing show-boating by the populist press. There is not one shred of evidence to support the view that foreign players are damaging the national team. THINK about it. The FA are a bunch of crusty old *****ers and have been since as long as I can remember. They don't ever die, they replicate themselves to the detriment of English football for the last 40 years. Like all international teams, England thrive with a good manager and fail with a lousy one. End of.
timao
idiots , i don't think I am, Trevor Brooking, Neil Warnock, Stuart Pearce, Ian Wright, Michel Platini, Sepp Blater, big names big football people should all listen to Timao ! (who), still no Arsenal posters on the forum.
VanMan
If it was Alan Smith I would call him a nationalist. This idea is not racist as such, but you are the ones suggesting that we are racists for wanting any ethnic/culture being allowed into the Premiership. It is bordering on segregastion man.
Goofle
The word coward or hypocrite accurately describes the editor of this site. It is clear that he is pretty well the only person on this site which explains why it's views are so one sided - and so poorly supported other than by himself. Clearly VanMan is yet another of his inventions. What does being 'id-ed' on the forums have to do with anything? It doesn't change or explain the lies and the dishonesty that Jon Ski routinely embarks on. It's time just to leave this site to the lunacy of it's narrow minded, bigoted, biased editor. It's the only opinion he and his imaginary friends can deal with.
Amos.
still no arsenal posters on the forum
VanMan
The vital huddersfield site is well supported, for the size of the club it punches well above its weight in Vital network terms. The Id' issue is that Amos and many others gunners and gunners only seem to be at pains to attempt to point out that posters on Huddersfield might have multiple Id's, however they seem very reluctant indeed to allow scrutiny of their own individual id or not. Thankyou for your continued Huddersfield, Yorkshire and England support.
Jonski
"I think its wrong to call it racist, Wrighty is just expressing his concern for English football" - Hitler started off only expressing his concerns about German unemployment to mate!
Ozi Gooner
As above, no A posters yet on the forum (shock). lol
VanMan
Yes let's all take lessons from someone who can put out a post containing. "Jon Ski, or whatever new northern monkey name your going by? *****IN' DIE! DIE, DIE, JON SKI *****IN' DIE!" Bit of an over reaction their too an article on football, would anyone care to guess as to the availability of certain medications in oz! lol
Tonytime
Still (shock) !, no A posters on the forum ! (surprise) ! lol,lol
