Terriers rise to see off Red Devils

Huddersfield Town
2 - 1
Manchester United

John Smiths Stadium

21 October 2017; 15:00

Attendance: 24,426

Referee:

Huddersfield produced the shock result of the day busting betting coupons up and down the country.

Right from the pre-match you could sense the atmosphere was building and slightly different to that of the Spurs game. The Home fans in absolute excellent voice right from the off and that noise unsettled the visitors with the team also making it uncomfortable for the multi-million pound Manchester United squad.

United rode out that initial 15 minute period without gifting anything away although Anthony Martial was lucky to remain on the pitch with an early double booking for Martial and Smith after a coming together, the former was then involved in a couple more situations that easily could have been a booking, with referee Mason showing some great leniency towards the Manchester United man.

This got the crowd going even more and it wasn't long after that Mata tried to pull the pants down of Aaron Mooy, yet the Australian sprinted clear and set up an overlapping Tom Ince, whose shot was saved by De Gea, with the rebound falling kindly to Mooy who had followed his pass into the box and he neatly slotted home the rebound.

The stands erupted in jubilation, and the goal was thoroughly deserved this was no fluke, credit must go to the referee for playing that advantage and it paid the ultimate dividend for The Terriers.

5 minutes later and delirium set in again as 'keeper Jonas Lossl released a long direct kick which Lindelof, who came on for the injured Phil Jones on 20 minutes, allowed to bounce, and with Laurent Depoitre lurking the Belgian rounded De Gea and slotted into an empty net!!

HALF TIME

Huddersfield 2-0 Manchester United

SECOND HALF

Manchester United made a double change at half time with Rashford and Mkhitaryan coming on for Juan Mata and Anthony Martial, who as we mentioned earlier was lucky to even be on the pitch.

You expected the inevitable barrage of attacks from the embarrassed Man Utd star studded side, yet they huffed and puffed and didn't really create any chances of note until 70 minutes in.

The goal came on 78 minutes with Lukaku, who had been marshalled by Schindler all game, going looking for the ball out wide. The Belgian put in a delicious cross which landed pin-point on Rashford's head as he drew hope back to the visiting Manchester United fans who had been kept largely quiet by the raucous home crowd and the lack of effort and desire their side had put on up until this point.

The Terriers fans raised their voices once again in support of the home side and they responded by putting their bodies on the line, and could have extended their lead as Van La Parra nearly rounded De Gea but the Spanish number 1 got just enough on the ball that it squirmed agonisingly away in the wrong direction.

There was still time for a fantastic block from 'Zanka' in the 94th minute and that would be the last goal mouth action of the game as the Terriers ran out with a famous victory over Manchester United, the first since 1952!

FULL TIME

Huddersfield Town 2-1 Manchester United.

Huddersfield goals: Mooy (28) Depoitre (33)

Man United goal: Rashford (78)

Star Player

Christopher Schindler

Kept Lukaku quiet all match as and United got desperate and punted balls forward he still won his duels even at one point against 3 men!

Manager Rating

David Wagner

Yet again proving that he learns from previous experiences. Huddersfield were not as open as they were against Tottenham and employed still a Terriers identity but not as high up the field as usual and it paid off to be a masterstroke

Opponent Rating

Jose Mourinho

The Manchester United manager was gracious in defeat and praised the Huddersfield squads desire and attitude to win the game
