Van der Schaaf was the former captain of Vitesse Arnhem and played 29 games for them in 2007/8 scoring three goals. A popular player with the fans, he was however out of contract in the summer of 2008 and couldn't agree terms.

A former PSV Eindhoven player under Guus Hiddink, the 29 year old was also reported to be on the verge of signing for Cardiff until talks broke down.

The Clarets offered the former Dutch Under-21 International, a three year deal and of course he arrived on a free transfer after being out of contract with his previous club.

Remco van der Schaaf signed an eighteen month loan agreement with Danish Superliga side Brøndby IF in January 2010.

This is his second loan spell at the club.He signed on loan for them in February 2009 until the end of 2008-9. He picked up a shoulder injury whilst playing for them in a match against FC Copenhagen in May 2009 and returned to Turf Moor. He subsequently had surgery for the injury but now appears to be fully fit.

The length of the current loan will take him up to the end of his contract with Burnley FC when it is likely he will leave Turf Moor and probably join Brøndby IF on a permanent basis.

He made just one first team appearance for the Clarets in their opening Championship game of the 2008-9 season against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough; a match in which we lost heavily 4-1. He had a handful of appearances on the bench but was an unused substitute. He went down with a mystery virus towards the end of 2008 and the first loan to Brøndby IF followed shortly after.

He made no apparances at all for Burnley in the 2009-10 season and was not even named on the bench
