Jones had been playing for the Clarets during the summer of 2013 and had been widely expected to sign once his contract with Wigan officially completed at the end of July.

He duly signed after becoming a free agent.

Southport-born Jones was at Old Trafford for a decade from the age of 10 but never really established himself in the first team. Whilst on United's books he spent time on loan at Preston North End and Dutch side NEC Nijmegen before leaving his parent club at the age of 21 to seek more regular first team football. He joined Derby in November 2006 after a bid of 1m was accepted. The deal would see Jones initially move on loan to Pride Park until the January transfer window, the first possible opportunity to make the transfer a permanent one. Jones helped the Rams gain promotion to the top flight in 2007 and then repeated the exercise with Wolves after joining them in June 2008 in a three-year deal for a reported fee of 1.2million. In August 2011, Jones was on the move again, this time to Wigan Athletic on a free transfer after impressing on trial during the pre-season. Jones then completed an emergency loan move to Blackburn Rovers in March 2013 for the remainder of the season. Rovers had been linked with a permanent move for the player this summer but he finished up on trial at Turf Moor has impressed both management and fans alike in the pre-season warm-up games
